HOW TO: Travel Packing

Travel packaging is an art, I wasn't good at it a couple years ago, I used to over pack or pack nothing at all, had to move around two travel bags, use half of the clothes I packed, forget things at hotels, forget important, useful and primary things at home... I was a mess.

One time I was volunteering at a remote town and got my period, had no pads at all, no one had packed some, had to free bleed for five days, there was limited water in that town and I had packed just a pair of pants and three shirts. I almost lost it that time. 

Traveled once to this beautiful town for a few days before Christmas, it was freezing and I had packed a light jacket. Several times I had traveled without packing hair ties or a brush, I have messy curly hair, I once had to deal with a (super) messy bun that held itself somehow. I used to travel a lot through middle and high school, whether it was family traveling or for volunteer work, but never once I stopped to realize what was I ding wrong.

Empacar es un arte, un arte en el que yo no era buena en un par de años atrás, solía empacar de más o nada en absoluto, tuve que mover dos bolsas de viaje, usar  la mitad de la ropa que llevaba, olvidar cosas en los hoteles u olvidar cosas importantes, útiles y primarias en casa... Era  un desastre.

Una vez me ofrecí como voluntaria en un pueblo remota y tuve mi período, no tenía almohadillas en absoluto, nadie había empacado algunas, tuve que sangrar libremente durante cinco días, había escases de agua en el pueblo y yo había empacado sólo un par de pantalones y tres camisas. Casi pierdo la cordura en ese viaje.

Viaje una vez a una hermosa ciudad por unos días antes de Navidad, estaba helando y había empacado solo una chaqueta ligera. Varias veces había viajado sin empaquetar ligas para el cabello o sin cepillo, tengo el cabello rizado y desordenado, una vez tuve que lidiar con un moño (súper) desordenado que se sostenía el solo de alguna manera. Solía viajar mucho durante la primaria y secundaria, ya fuera para viajar en familia o por trabajo voluntario, pero nunca me detuve a pensar que estaba haciendo mal 

A couple of years ago I decided to visit my grandma for at least to weeks every school break in her home town, before this decision I did visited her (I'm not a bad grandchild) but now that I'm in college I don't travel as much as I did before. So.... first time I went to visit grandma I got there in a bus with a REALLY HUGE ASS TRAVEL SUITCASE that almost didn't fit in the back of the cab that took me to her house, I also had a handbag and a backpack with me, on top of that I managed to pack only a pair of street sandals as the appropriate footwear for my trip, she does lives a pair of hours from the beach so I thought this town would have the whole sunny and wet experience, my grandma took me to all these cute country towns near hers where all you could do was walk, we spent a beautiful afternoon at a lake, I did tried to climb a hill in sandals but I just couldn't, it was December so I did almost died at night because everything just got way too cold.

I had traveled alone before this but this was the huge travel experience where I realized something had to change.

Hace un par de años decidí visitar a mi abuela por lo menos dos semanas cada vacación escolar en su ciudad natal, antes de tomar esta decisión si visitaba (no soy una nieta malvada) pero ahora que estoy en la universidad no viajo tanto como antes. Así que... la primera vez que fui a visitar a mi abuela llegué allí en un autobús con una MALETA DE VIAJE REALMENTE ENORME que casi no cabía en la parte trasera del taxi que me llevó a su casa, también traía un bolso y una mochila conmigo, por encima de eso me las arreglé para empacar sólo un par de sandalias de calle como el calzado adecuado para mi viaje, ella vive un par de horas de la playa, así que pensé que esta ciudad tendría toda la experiencia soleada y mojada, mi abuela me llevó a todos estos lindos pueblos cercanos a ella donde todo lo que podía hacer era caminar, pasamos una tarde hermosa en un lago, intenté subir una colina en sandalias pero no pude, era diciembre así que casi me morí en la noche porque todo se puso demasiado frío.

Había viajado sola antes de esto, pero fue en esta enorme experiencia de viaje donde me di cuenta de que algo tenía que cambiar.

Since then I have improved and mastered the art of travel packing, of course if you're a backpacker or you're traveling the world this is probably not useful and you might think I still pack a lot, but I'm much happier now in my bus voyages where I can actually lift my bag without hurting myself. 

• Two or three days before my trip I check the weather of the city I'm going and how it has been through the week, in my grandma's town case I call her too to ask her how the weather has been.
• I usually make my bag one or two days before my trip so I have a bullet list of essentials both in my phone and my iPad invisibly separated in "things I have to pack while doing my bag" and "things I'll pack right before leaving" (such as my phone, its charger and my deodorant), I check this list before the trip and before I get back to try and not forget anything.
• Choosing the types of clothes you're gonna pack is really important, my simple way to do it is to make a mix between what I think is glam but edgy, so that covers t-shirts with shorts or skinny jeans, gold jewelry, statement handbag and cute shoes/sneakers.
• My traveling clothes are ALWAYS a pair of sporty pants, fitted t-shirt, light jacket/sweater and the big pair of sneakers I intend to use if we somehow end up in the country side, why? first, I get cold as hell with the bus conditioned air and two, the sweater and the sneakers usually take a lot of space in the bag.
• This is going to change your life, instead of folding, ROLL YOUR CLOTHES, they will take a hell less of space and they won't get those weirdly perfect stipes wrinkles.
• Pack a pair of heels and a cute summer dress that can look easily more elegant, you never now when you're going to get invited to an exclusive club, a dance or a wedding (all of this has happened to me and not only one time)
• I still carry a backpack with me in the bus, this usually contains my electronic gadgets, wallet and my sweater, I suggest you pack your handbag and a beach bag if you're traveling near the sea, it takes less space in the bag and a backpack is more convenient to transport fragile souvenirs with you, handbags tend to be heavier if you put a lot of things in them.

Desde entonces he mejorado y dominado el arte de empacar para viajes, por supuesto, si eres un mochilero o estás viajando por el mundo esto probablemente no es útil y podrías pensar que todavía empaco mucho, pero estoy mucho más feliz ahora en mis viajes de autobús donde realmente puedo levantar mi bolsa sin lastimarme.

• Dos o tres días antes de mi viaje checo el clima de la ciudad a donde viajo y como ha estado durante la semana, en el caso del pueblo de mi abuela le llamo también para preguntarle cómo ha estado el clima.
• Empaco uno o dos días antes de mi viaje así que tengo una lista de esenciales en mi teléfono y iPad separadas invisiblemente en “cosas que empacare al hacer la maleta” y “cosas que empacare el mismo día del viaje” (como mi teléfono y desodorante), checo esta lista antes del viaje y antes de volver para saber que no me falta nada.
• Escoger el tipo de ropa  que empacaras es muy importante, la manera simple en que yo lo hago es haciendo una combinación del estilo vanguardista y glamoroso, así que eso cubre playeras con shorts o pantalones entubados, joyería en dorado, un bolso exuberante y zapatos/tenis bonitos.
• La ropa de viaje que SIEMPRE uso al viajar es un par de pantalones deportivos, una playera ajustada, una chaqueta/suéter ligero y un par de tenis grandes que pueda usar si en el viaje haremos alguna excursión. ¿Por qué? Primero, me da mucho frio en aire acondicionado de los autobuses y dos, el suéter y el tenis ocupan mucho espacio en la maleta.
• Esto va a cambiarte la vida, en lugar de doblar, ENROLLA TU ROPA, tomaran menos espacio y no tendrán esas raras y perfectas arrugas.
• Empaca un par de tacones y un vestido lindo que se pueda ver más elegante con los accesorios adecuados, nunca sabes cuándo te invitaran a un club exclusivo, un baile o a una boda (todo me ha pasado y no solo una vez)
• Sigo cargando conmigo una mochila en el autobús, usualmente lleva todos mis aparatos electrónico, cartera y suéter, te sugiero empacar tu bolso y una bolsa de playa si viajas cerca del mar, toman muy poco espacio en la maleta y la mochila puede resultar conveniente para transportar recuerditos contigo pues los bolsos de mano suelen quedar muy pesados cuando pones muchas cosas dentro de ellos.

Como regalo te presento mi “Lista de Viaje” para que la copies y pegues en tu aplicación de notas de tu teléfono, puedes personalizarla y detallarla lo más que quieras, yo por ejemplo en cada viaje le pongo el número de cosas que llevo de cada una.
